I am a geek, so I investigated how it works... it's quite simple, it's just using a hyperlink to the Facebook badge, provided by Facebook:
"http://www.facebook.com/badge.php?&items[=badge_profile_pic&items[=badge_mobile_status&layout=vert&format=png"It's a facebook.com link, so it adheres to the Facebook security model, e.g. it only works if you're currently logged into Facebook within the same browser session.

it's a mini social experiment - i like how people flip out about it - they have clicked on the link either out of morbid curiosity or to laugh at someone else and then they get all precious when its a link of themselves/girlfriend etc kind of double standards isn't it?
also, this is probably the least offensive joke at someone's expense you can have. After all, it treats everyone the same regardless of colour, creed, looks, religion, etc, and no part of the joke humiliates them publically.

Well actually, you don't need to click on anything... it's a link to an image, and the website is smart enough to display the the image directly, so nobody has to click on the link.
Before I realized it was a joke, I was primarily freaked out by the fact that my picture was posted on a public internet forum... for a second I thought I was being stalked or something. My secondary reaction was, "But I'm not ugly!!!"
