  • hippy, I went to BC today, you should have posted up in wanted.

you work in town? nip to cavendish or condork and get an Izumizumizumi

  • for a chain isn't cavendish cycles on the way twixt work and home?

condor had decent chains in. they didn't have an eai or condor 18t cog though. brixton however did. i still need a dura-ace lockring though.
    how fucked up is that.

Shoulda said you were going ya buzztard! :P

Liverpool St. Cavendish is on the way home I suppose and I do actually ride past Condork. Duh! Oh, it's coz I don't carry a lock.. so I never stop anywhere. I was gonna sneak out at lunch but it never happned/

  • take bike into condor. the chains were behind the counter, i saw them in shiny boxes.

  • Don't forget to help yourself to the sweets.

  • Free food?! Why didn't you say!!! No wonder they're so expensive.. :)
    I'll go in tonight. Maybe.

  • the key to doing the DD is not going too fast at the start and depleting the glycogen stored in your muscles too quickly and to start eating small amounts before you get hungry and before you are having to metabolise carbs into energy.
the worst thing you can do is to try and keep up with those who are faster than you. find your own pace where it's easy to hold a conversation without compromising your breathing. if you can find people of a similar speed to ride with it's even better. if you can draught each other properly and hold a wheel you will get there with less effort.

Not done the Dun Run (yet...) but this sounds about right. I think it's before you start metabolising fat into energy, though?

I suspect if you eat too much in one go at the halfway point or when you get to Dunwich it'll make you very sleepy - you know that feeling when you've had a big meal in the evening and you just want to doze? Not so fun when you're exerting yourself. It's probably better to keep topping up the carbs en route rather than ingesting a huge load of them in one go.

  • No, it's better to eat a Family-sized pizza at the start, then another one after 50k to top that up and a pint before the pubs shut. Then it's a case of eating at least 2 sausages per hour (that'd you've pre-cooked of course). A bottle of brandy should be carried at all times from which you would take a swig each half-hour to help with the processing of the sausagedrates. At the finish your butler will have 14kg of mashed potato waiting.

  • Much though I'd love to do it I just can't see that it's going to be anything approaching sensible.
I'm going to stay at home and sulk instead.

couldn't we organise a rickshaw or a tandem for you to come??
I have neither mind you, but would be willing to take turns..

  • I suspect if you eat too much in one go at the halfway point ...

no fear of that! Last time we rocked up there was no food left only tea and sugar! ;(

  • It is an "unsupported" ride. You should be able to carry on without the food stop. Consider it a bonus.

  • I'm a cretin and rode to work this morning, just to test the water mind, as riding to Polo doesn't really count as it's about 5-10 minutes from my house, basically, I worked this out as a schedule:

**Wednesday - **Cycle my usual commute distance of 20 miles.
Thursday - Ride 37 miles, which is 85% further than today distance wise (Equivelent to my commute plus the meetings I need to attend in other offices plus west beers)
**Friday - **Ride 68.45 miles, which is 85% further than Thursday (A distance which should be achievable, given that I have no idea what I'm meant to be doing drinkwise and have been off my bike long enough that all I want to do is cycle)
**Saturday - **Guess what, an 85% uplift from Fridays miles would put me at 126.63 miles. Which I believe is slightly longer than the distance required to complete the Dynamo.

Flawless logic. What could possibly go wrong?

  • the +85% daily increments might make your collarbone hurt. A bit.

  • Fuck my collarbone :]
It's making sure my legs are ready that I'm interested in.

That kind of schedule is likely to do the opposite

  • That kind of schedule is likely to do the opposite

That's what I was thinking. I would have thought you would be better off leaving the Friday one out and just doing it on Saturday.

  • yeah, +1

  • Yeah, do slightly longer than 37 on thursday and skip friday if you're really serious!

  • doing lots of miles this week is too late, it'll make it worse!

  • Have confidence, you are capable of more than you think. I've seen people do the ride whose greatest distance was the 30+ miles of the Christmas Day Ride and have only commuted since then. In fact I kind of envy them because I'd love to feel that sense of acheivement again.

  • This is my first Dunwich and first century so I was wondering, what are people taking food wise (how much and what kind of thing)? Reading Hippy's comment above about preparing to get nothing at the mid way point got me thinking...

  • My concern isn't whether I'm fit enough to do the miles, it's regarding the state of my left knee.
I'm missing the two main ligaments. Basically all that holds my knee together is the muscle.

Due to my broken collarbone I've been off the bike for 5 weeks, 6 by the time of dunwich.
My worry, and insistance on riding increasing distances, is that I've had enough muscle wastage in that I just won't be able to complete the ride through the pain of constant over extension. Bear in mind that I'm also brakeless (Yes Object is his own worst enemy shocker).

If I can manage the 70 on Friday with minimal pain then the DD should be doable. If I can't then I'll be close enough to home that I can jump a taxi and/or get a train

If I sack Friday off and just to the DD on Sunday and my knee fucks up I'll be in the middle of no where I'll be back on crutches and another step closer to some hardcore operations that I just don't want.

  • Object I'm gonna get you too drunk to ride.

  • Too drunk to stand.
    Too drunk lie down.
    Too drunk to talk.
    Too drunk to see.
Too drunk to know if I'm actually still alive.

All of these things I have been.

Too drunk to realise that cycling is not the best idea?
    Never.
