The other option is to get some rims that in between. I've got DT Swiss TK7.1 which are touring rims and they are quite happy with a 2.2" 29er tyre on there. I'd get more tyre volume with a wider rim but it all works fine and they work with skinnies too. BTW, I wouldn't get Velocities for a bike that will see serious abuse as I think you ccan get much better quality rims for similar money.
I would also get your bike spaced at 132.5mm at the end so you can use mountain or road hubs and I'd get a derailleur hanger (but no braze ons if you want a clea look) so you can go geared if you want at some point.
