If memory serves me correctly, Highway Code says red rear light mandatory, front light optional - quite frankly - I would not ride in the dark without either. Day time is bad enough with all those cabs.
If you didn't have rear light, nothing you can really do. Technically you were in the wrong crossing the line, but cops meant to use discretion, like they have nothing better to do.
