I rode road shoes for a few weeks while waiting to be able to afford to replace my mtb ones. The main difference I felt (bear in mind i was using spd pedals...) was that i found it quite hard to clip in because of the smooth rigid sole kept sliding all over the pedal, which was pretty dodgy when trying to move off at junctions. I kept fucking up and slipping off the pedals, jamming my balls on the top tube. On the plus side i did find it much easier to trackstand with the rigid soles, so just stopped unclipping at lights. ANd stopping at lights for that matter. I was ready to explain to any cops that i only jumped the lights out of fear for my as yet unconcieved children, but i never got the chance...
I have new mtb shoes now. It's all good.
