Sure taking offense is not the same as experiencing physical harm but can you maintain that words cannot be hurtful ?

Words can offend people, I have no problem offending people, racists, bigots, misogynists, religious inerrantists and so on, I do it all the time, not through a concerted effort but by showing them no deference, by expressing my opinions, I have absolutely no problem offending them, but hurt ? I doubt very much I hurt them.
