Samaria was a sort of an early Jewish deal, they took the Torah as the real deal but kind of fell behind as Judaism split and moved off in a new direction (or something like that).

The reason that, in the above tired platitude, the Samaritan is referred to as a good Samaritan is that when these two jewish tribes went their own ways they did so with some animosity, the allusion in the parable is that all samaritans are bastards by default, but this fine fellow stands out for his kindness.

That kind of sums up my whole point - firstly the idea of helping someone is trivial, it is basic, it is self evidently good, we make this point no clearer with tired platitudes trotted out by self important theologians and apologists, who sell us self evident basic information under the guise of some divine wisdom.

And secondly it tends to get overlooked that inherent in this story is that animosity the Jews had towards those from Samaria.
