Cav is a great bloke and a great winner. Did you see him after the stage yesterday? Fighting off the media so he could thank his team mates for the work they did. Hardly the behaviour of an ego monster!
He wrote (or his ghost writer did) that he didn't think he was strong enough yet (ie old enough) to compete for the green jersey but he'll try to make it through to Paris. Hardly the attitude of an arrogant man. And the pure sprinters of yesteryear used to pack up and leave at the first sight of an uphill slope.
Winning tends to require a winning attitude. Cav knows that when it goes right, he'll likely win. And he's got proof of that. Great stuff! Chapeau Mark!
