Noisy ride

  • Hi there, appreciate any help you can give me on this one. Got my bike back from the shop the other day after having BB put in, cranks attached then chain. It's a lovely late 70s, early 80s merlin frame which I've made fixed using an Eno eccentric hub (don't try this at home kids - very stupid and expensive). The chain line looks spot on but there's a reasonable amount of noise coming from the chain as it passes over the sprocket and ring.

First off am I being realistic wanting a silent ride and secondly what are the likely reasons for the noise (chain tension, chainline, bearings)?

  • I had an ENO hub and I could never silence it to the point where it annoyed me so much I sold the bike with it on.

  • As long as your chainline IS good, make sure you have the right combination of (undamaged) components (3/32" or 1/8" for cog, chainring and chain), then make sure it's clean and well lubed. As far as chain tension is concerned, you should have at most about half an inch of vertical play in the chain, about half way between cog and chainring.
If none of these work buy some earplugs/an ipod/ a new bike ;)

  • some chains are quieter than others, i couldn't say which, you'd have to ask a more experienced bike person.

i know my chain tensioner, the springy dérailleur jobby makes a bit of noise, from the chain wheel on it, but that's about it.
