Gitane "Road Runner" tell me more?

  • I have found a Gitane, "Road Runner" it is badged, in the basement at work and fancy adopting it.

Can you tell me more about it, and its vintage perhaps.

It is a bit rusty in the frame, but otherwise seems in reasonable, though tired, shape. Would it make a good fixed gear? though it has forward facing dropout....

  • forward facing dropout is a good sign. looks like ti has a concor saddle, and some quite nice quill pedals, chromed forks.

    you need a new camera.

  • I'll take more notice of the bits on the bike and take better pic tomorrow, that was on my phone's rubbish picture taker, I wouldn't call it a camera......

Saddle doesnt say Concor on it, said something else, but I'll tak emore notice of all that tomorrow. Its black suede...

So forward facing dropouts, whats the benefit of that than rear facing, can I get the same sort of adjustment chain tension wise for a fixed gear?

  • Obligatory Sheldon link - basically a forward facing horizontal dropout is fine for a fixed gear as it gives you enough adjustment to get the chain tension right.

  • also, you can run mudguards and still take the wheel off with comparative ease. like in this picture/abstract image.

  • it has "Hurret" derailluers....
    Anyone know about those?

    Fairly bog-standard 70's/80's kit.

That and the suicide brake levers imply its a distinctly consumer-grade machine.

    Only one "r", btw...

  • Fair do's, consumer grade, suspected that, as there doesnt seem to be any "pedigree parts" on it.
If it goes though I'll try and "obtain" it by fair and low cost means and do something with it.

..and I'm typing from memory.... "huret". Ta.
knowledgable opinions on this sort of stuff are great, I dont know what this type of bike's ancestry is and those of you who know are very helpful.

  • Here are some better pictures wih details of the bike.

Frame marked, "Modele VITUS Depose" with a frame number I assume above it.
Front and Rear hubs marked, "SUZUE"
Wheels are, MAVIC 700c, "Module E" I think
Deraileur, HURET SACHS "RIVAL" 12 speed.
    Cranks, SUPER MAXY 175mm
Chanirings have, SUGINO bolts, so SUGINO Chainrings??
    Pedals stamped, SP-150
    Saddle, CONPY
    Brake levers, Weinnmann
    Brakes, CLB
    Stem says, "SR" on it
Chrome fork has little chevron type detail with "G" at the top of fork leg
Only decals on the frame say "GITANE" and "ROAD RUNNER".

Anyone able to shed any more light on what the frame is really made of, is it rubbish, satisfactory, good, or maybe even excellent?

    Welcome any opinions ideas!

  • If anyone knows and can identify or estimate the frame material and quality of the frame/material, that would be my main concern.

I've trawled the web and there are no giveaways as to getting a really good close answer. Someone's knowledge in experience is the key to this one I think.

    Thanks, hope you can help
