Old peugeot

  • newbie to building fixed gear.
I have an old peugeot frame that has a flip flophub at the back.BLB said the drop outs were no good and should forget doing anything and buy a new bike.
Does anyone think its worth building the bike up?

If you have vertical dropouts you need a different bike or frame, old steel bikes work

  • Lots of old peugeots have been converted, but newer-old peugeots have vertical drop outs. That's probably the problem.

  • it has vertical drop outs

  • what bernhard say....

  • if you really want a pug .. you can buy mine haha...

  • think i might ditch it then

  • i built a singlespeed with vertical drop-outs and used a chain tensioner to accomodate the lack of horizontal 'pull'. I love it but i dig that you might not be happy rolling freewheel. (you cannot use a tensioner if you want it to be fixed)

if you have your heart set on fixed then i'm told you can pull it off with vertical drops but your choice of gearing is very limited and still you might not be able to achieve sufficient tension in the chain. This calculator will help - http://eehouse.org/fixin/fixmeup.php

One last option available to you is an 'eccentric hub' - http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/white-hubs.html

    good luck

  • or, you could put new drop-outs on, depending on the frame
If you're interested, ted from Fixedgearlondon does track ends for about £60
it depends how much you like your bike

  • so would yours be alright to convert to single speed rather than fixed speed cos of the vetical dropouts? was gonna respray my frame but since yours is done...
