Tynan's method is the pro version, lovely job. For less effort and money, use hammerite. It is a primer, colour and top coat all in one. I did my whole bike in it. Much harder wearing than the Halfords sprays I used on my tourer.
plus good for colour matching for later touch ups, where necessary.
plus plus, the 'hammered' finish colours can cover up little dings and scratches that won't buff out
