You can do what you like, although you'll have to wait around in Dunwich for about 6 hours for me!
-
• #228
Are you riding gears this year hippy to try and blast it there and arrive at 3 am?
-
• #229
Is that because you're waiting in Dunwich or because you expect to be slower than me?

Ed kindly explained the futility of getting there early... there's NOTHING there!
He raced there last year and was one of the first there but his parents live near Ipswich. I have to get back to London so smashing it there and waiting from 3-7am with nothing to do doesn't sound like much fun. Then again, I could try it and turn around and head back.. that'd be tricky ;) -

Put it this way. My training this weekend constituted of staying in bed then getting hammered Saturday night and all day Sunday.
-
• #232
So? I got drunk Saturday after riding 15k to drop off the Spesh and then sat inside rest of weekend (save for being rudely disturbed by a rear wheel-less murtle who needed rescuing!).

4 places left or 4 places max per train?
The train from Darsham will be a local hopper of 2-3 coaches, 4 if you're lucky. Depending on what type of stock they have, there will be a fixed number of allocated bike spaces, almost always in one carriage only. You can usually get away with sticking 4 bikes in that space. However, it may be specifically be designed for 2 only with some kind of rack configuration that makes it close to impossible to stack more in.
IIRC in 2005 it was a 4 carriage train and the guard just booted people out of one of them and chivvied 30+ of us into stacking them in fast. I gave him a totally unfounded assurance he wouldn't be liable for any damage to the bikes.
Ipswich had a big fat guards van and we loaded with almost no problems (might have lost a mudgaurd...). However, the stock has probably changed since then and they tend to have racked places that you might have difficulty putting more than 10 bikes in. I can't say how things will lie for certain, but be prepared for slow if you're planning the train and haven't booked anything. If you have booked, don't expect any respect out of your fellow DDers

My mate Dinky (yes, the black girl on the recumbant) apparently rode the DD (pre-run route) last night, with a guy called Peter, who helps organise the route and stuff (I don't know much about that). Had I known early, I'd have given a heads up to anybody who wanted to tag along. No way did I go. I'm hoping to die of old age, not the world's worst saddle sore.
Its next weekend. Don't know if I've got the legs for that type of distance. I can't employ my guts, because I exchanged that for 2 donuts and a packet of Wotsits. So before anybody says HFTU, I can't....no guts. Sorry.

has the route changed then?

MrSmith, I'll hear from her later and if there's any news I'll post it. I think she's having a well earned kip (after working all day, then cycling through the night).

- Benanza + 4 friends. Can't wait, should be a good laugh. Going on my geared Van Nicholas because I never use it anymore and it's looking at me funny.

Could have just been to see if any road layouts have changed since last year.

ATM unlikely-
in the worst shape I've been in ever, and have a severe lack of a working bike.
except the holdsworth, but changing tubs at night on a long ride isn't appealing.
Hopefully will have a bike up and running by midweek.
This ride may be unlikely for me though.... -

Here's the full SP (and a bit of side-story). Dinky set off with Patrick Field (sorry for referring to him as Peter before; he is of the London School of Cycling: http://www.londonschoolofcycling.co.uk/home.html ).
They left at midnight, and then encountered an almighty accident somewhere around Epping, where cars looked liked they'd been through a compactor. But the police let them through....sort of around really. The journey took them 11+ hours. Dinky needed to have a sleep on the way, as she'd been awake more than 36 hours.
The NEW HALFWAY POINT has been changed, and is now Lavenham. Last year's halfway has been abandoned.
Next week, Dinky will set off hours ahead of the official start time, because she puts out the candles along the route, to help guide you hardcore bunch. By the way, she says that at the PUB ON THE PARK (official start venue), tickets can be bought on the day from BARRY MASON for tickets on a return coach. There is also a lorry that transports the bikes back. The grand price is £25.oo.
Hope that was helpful.

GA2G, can you confirm if the route is the same as previous years, bar change in the middle stop village? I want to use a GPS route from a previous year but need to know if it's still valid. Cheers.

I'm definite for this, and am going to learn from last year... I'm dropping IN.

Sounds interesting.
Can I join or is this a special time for you and the coast with the most?
