single-speed track bike is like married batchelor, it's an analytical *a priori *falsehood.

No it isn't. It's a tautology. All track bikes are single-speed.

oxymoron?
-
• #13
it is either oxymoronic or tautological depending on the rigour with which you define 'single-speed'.

I've seen a number of these things squeeking around east London.
Really look very shoddy close up - normally with a miserable looking person riding them quite slowly.
Probably contemplating that it wasn't quite the bargain they thought originally.

when I was on the bench with my girlfriend on Russell Square park, one bloke is walking past us with his white unipack with yellow rims, smiling as if he's a proper fakenger, with a cool 'custom-made' bike, his smile automatically change to an embarrassment scorn when I was slowly tutting as if he's a dog and did a poo on my carpet, especially after he seen my Bianchi.
that look on his face when he realise that his bike isn't that great is priceless.

Someone may have mad an ill advised purchase but that does not mean they deserve a condescending dirty look. e.t.c

most of them do when they paid £200 for a bike and after a couple months have to spend another £200 getting part replaced due to breaking down/wearing out quickly.
I gave the same look to people who buy £150 full-suspension bike thinking it's perfect for bombing around in London.

Why not educate them if it bothers you that much? Just coming out with snobbish and condescending remarks and looks is pretty poor behavior.
Your story read to me.
"I was sat with my girlfriend when this guy walks by looking happy with his new bike. He smiled at me but I looked at him like the piece of shit he was. After he saw my bike he really new how crap he and his bike were."
Sure the guy is ignorant sure he made a bad purchase. Thats all. It's not that big a deal. Your acting like some sort of teen American college alpha, beta house thing look down on everyone else not in your club.

Reminds me of a guy who was drinking in the bar I work in - he had some kind of curvy seat-tube track frame with risers, i forget the make. I went past as he was leaving and said 'nice bike!' All I got in response was a snotty 'yes, I know', said in the way that implies that it is far better than anything that I, a lowly bartender, could ever hope to own. Prick.
