...but aren't you supposed to rub black marks on hard floors with white rubber to get rid of them?

you can get them up with any thing you rub them with as long as its clean and a non-marking compound. we had to use our hands at school.

no it's got nothing to do with dirt.
to remove the rubber takes friction. this friction creates heat which burns the rubber as it's removed. the rubber becomes black when burned leaving black marks.
using another rubber object to remove the makes is ti do with less heat generated as it takes less effort to remove the mark than it does to make it. -

actually the black shit you get on rims tends to be from the rim itself, i.e. metal.
