most peeps aren't flexible enough to ride comfortably on the drops!it bl*ody hurts the back also when you start, and tri bars are even worse.
that's because most people have the bars too low and too far away from them, there's no point in having a racy position on the tops, when you get down on the drops you'll be licking the front wheel and stretching like a rubber band.
with the correct riding position, the drops can be as comfortable as anything, they are there to be used, to make you more aero dynamic, not a torture device

Ulrich clearly needs some guidance too...
"Lay off the cakes and pies fat lad".
That should help. ;)

Only three T-shirts!
I go for at least 7 forcing my arms into the fixie riding position through wads of specialized clothRIde down on the drops and you'll be kissing tyre, peds and tarmac in that order. its great for hills and open roads but you need the vantage point in town!

Off Topic - it's from deviant art lots of cutesiness.
Your avatar is a bit 'Off the Peg' Prav. Might wanna try something more 'custom'.

a similar situation happened with trials..
people who rode fully custom bikes (as there were no OTP bikes) longed for more trials riders and actively encouraged others to start..
then manufacturers began to offer these bikes fully built, the buyers and bikes are frowned upon.
no need for it, is just to make you feel you started something and are special.

sam814, yeah, that's success and capitalism for ya! it's a funny thing seeing venerably cycling traditions challenged by newcomers. how many (blokes) here, for instance, have shaved legs?

I can name about 5, maybe more
myself not included. that would be a task I'm not prepared to endure. I would, though, if I weren't so hirsute

how many have shaved legs?
Too many. Bloody want to be pros.

many of them do it so they can touch themselves in bed at night and pretend it's a lady
-
• #61
Am I not allowed to shave my legs then?

Your welcome to shave whatever just don't give me some bull shit about aerodynamics, massage or scabs. It's for looks and touch.
[\end rant]

Never claimed otherwise.

Good....
I'm going to sit over here now.
And feel silly.

leg shaving:
will it make me faster? of course not.
will it be more comfortable? unlikely, given how stubble growing back must itch like fuck.
plus it would take ages to do and probably block the plughole, I have better things to do, like post on forums and criticise other people's opinions

very much agreed.
I see so many people with way long stems, and poorly sized frames. Going on the drops feels an impossible difference and well awkward, the combination of long stem + bullhorns or brake hoods also feels crazy choppy as does super wide bars you seen on a lot of bikes.
Make sure your bike fits you, and consider narrower bars if steering is light. Then drops become a joy to use. they are the perfect height for em on my raleigh, I definetely use everytime to power up hills and feel very stable in doing so.
Unlike the fashionistas with 5 inch sharp drop stems and enourmous bars on their Keirin/track bikes.

i run my road bike with a longish stem and low stack height with a high seat. i goto the drops on fast flowing roads away from traffic other than that im on the bull horns. most people who try and ride my road bike struggle even those who are taller and longer in the torso than me. it's classed as bad practice to climb on the drops because of the change in hip placement in relation to the pedals. it also increases your weight on the front wheel which under steep climbing situations can cause a fall.

Platini, sorry. I meant when SEATED. Obviously when you stand and cycle, it opens up chest space for more oxygen intake. Again, it would also depend on the length of crank used; a 175mm would bring the leg up closer to the chest, whereas a 165mm, not as much. A person using a 162.5mm crank length might even be able to still sit and use drops and not be affected as much by the closing of his chest as his/her leg comes up against it.

I like that, when you click on "geometry" it just says "Who needs geometry? this stuff is OFF THE PEG !!"
rob, that made me cry with laughter. i even checked the link hoping it actually said that.
thought FELT might even be ahead of us!
Nice bike scrapper, i really want a white bike.
