  • Though actually, Victoria Pendleton is far easier on the eye than old Beryl.

I was sitting near Victoria Pendleton on Centre Court on Saturday for the Murray and Nadal matches. She's not that hot. The middle Saturday of Wimbledon is when they invite lots of sports stars to watch from the Royal box, and get them all to take a bow beforehand. The crowd were predictably enthusiastic about Hurst and Charlton, Pinsent and Redgrave, etc, and of course that fucktard Henman. VP got a small but polite smattering of applause from everyone except me. I went nuts. Pretty sure I was the only fg rider in there.

  • You went to Wimbledon?

  • see above

  • You went to Wimbledon?

Do I detect a note of hipster irony there?

  • What about getting jolted to pieces riding a lighter bike than my old warhorse?

Don't the benefits of riding a lighter bike outweigh those of riding a heavy bike (i didnt even know that there were any), also your worried about growing massive thunder thighs - surely a good way to get a pair is to be cycling on a heavy bike ?

  • The other thing with thighs is gearing. As others have said, it's pretty hard to bulk up just by riding, you'll just tone up your legs (and bum and tum, for that matter too!). However, doing fast short rides with a big gear has potential to add bulk. No fear, 9 miles is plenty long enough and pick a spinny gear and you'll be fine!

  • your hip flexers and buttocks will become especially toned. I think its difficult to get massive thighs if you are not of a large frame/build to begin with. Most of the cyclists on this forum that I have met ( including blokes ) , don't have particularly monsterous thighs. I suppose if you ate a pound of raw meat everyday and road a massive gear they may grow a bit. And like everyon else said about 65 should be good to begin with. Will greatly improve cario-vascular fitness

  • If, like me, you are overweight, your thighs will grow but grow proportionately and eventuually fat will be replaced by muscle. Most cyclists are thin and thin because they cycle. Their thighs do not grow as large because they have less to push up hills. Stay thin, cycle light.

  • It's the gearing on my wife's singlespeed (she doesn't feel press-ganged into going fixed, and why should she)

because she is married to BRING ME MY FIX

  • Be care some males on here may have high blood pressure and the sight of a shapely lady in bloomers may be just too much....be warned.

the high blood pressure came about after the workers coup and only exists to guide us until it is no longer needed when it will fade away, and we will have a true workers utopia. if you had a true understanding of dialectics you would know this. -10 commie points

@ OP why not come meet some of the lovely boys and girls from this forum on Friday by going on our America ride?

and vicy p is well rude (as in good)

  • How many single speed girls are there out there?

Most of the replies to my Big Thighs thread seem to have been from guys.
    Wonder why that is ...?

I would post a new thread called Singlespeed Girls - but worried that the very word "girls" might just cause too much excitement for the gentlemen.

  • you must mean the Trixie Chix

    harridans.

  • Time for a female sub-forum..?
    Sort it out ladees!

  • Tombola the thread you want is here http://www.londonfgss.com/thread2121.html
Yes there are a bunch of girls who ride fixed, and we get together every week come along, you'd be most welcome - even if you havent got a fix/ss yet, you can try some of ours for size..

what makes you think we havent already got one? ;-)
besides we like playing with boys as well you know..

  • Not so worried about downhill, as my commute will only have an uphill. Oddly, the downhill seems to disappear on the outward route ...

Fixed wheel is by far the easiest most comfortable way to ride up a hill. When your getting used to it, going flat out down hills and letting yourself 'spin' can be a little daunting.

Hence the two brakes being reccomended.

Also lightweight road bikes give a much more comfortable plush ride as they are rather flexible. An older bike with a longer wheelbase increases on this effect, but it it feels best to ride a post 80's lightweight steel road bike with sharp handling if you are going fixed. Vintage bikes with Longer wheelbase bike better for coasting I think.

  • Why oh why oh why oh why do people pretend that there is a universal best way of doing things?!

I ride SS, FG and geared and find there is no best way of going up hills, other than being quite fit. I have done experiments on this and everything!

If there is a difference it is so slight as to be meaningless, but i reckon it's the bike equivalent of the talk about the right formation to play in football - people love to chat don't they!

Re thighs - my gf gets bigger thighs from cycling, but then she's quite muscular (no sniggering at the back). Others ride bikes and don't get any bulk (v pendleton), I suspect it's largely physiological. I see this when I'm racing at herne hill - you seem to either get Wiggins-esque sticks or Bulgarian shot-putter-types.

  • every one knows the sticks are faster :P

  • every one knows the sticks are faster :P
    Spoken like a true stick.

  • Hello and thanks to those of you who suggested cycling in one gear to try out the single-speed experience.

It was fine bowling along, so proves my suspicion that I use only use one gear anyway. And also made me more conscious about cycling to use energy and momentum efficiently, rather than using brakes and gears all the time.

However, getting away at the lights felt very slow and lumbering - does a single-speed chain work more efficiently to pick up the speed?

And, have not yet tried The Hill - so will see how it feels on my way home.
I come from York - no hills. I left there 22 years ago, but still find any hill exotic and rather puzzling.

And thanks for all the Big Thigh advice - fascinating discussion ...
I think I am more the stick build than the shot-putter build, so I will hope for the best.

  • I think it's all about how you ride when it comes to big thighs. How many miles do you do each day? if your only commuting riding fixed or SS wont make a massive difference from ridding your road bike. If you have a small frame already it will be difficult to get massive thighs.

  • I do audax rides (not on fixed, yet) and although I have fairly bulky thighs, I'm something of an anomaly among the other riders. Most of the other men and pretty much all of the women have nice slender toned thighs. That's except for some of the supervets who have legs like chicken wings.

I don't think it's much to do with distance as much as it is to do with body type and rather importantly diet. If you replenish energy without providing the building blocks of muscle then you won't bulk much. This actually makes beer a good thing.

  • Big thighs run in my family and I love it. It makes buying jeans/suits a bit tricky but apart from that it's all good. They are a lot more toned through years of cycing then they ever were when I was purely a rugby man, that's for sure.

As for if they're a hot look, well that comes down to the individual. For me, it's Nigella Lawson over Kate Moss anyday of the week.

  • For me it would be neither. They are both far too annoying to spend more than one nano second with.

  • I wouldn't want Nigella behind me on a tandem.

She might be good at feed stations though - if she left any for anyone else.
