Why oh why oh why oh why do people pretend that there is a universal best way of doing things?!
I ride SS, FG and geared and find there is no best way of going up hills, other than being quite fit. I have done experiments on this and everything!
If there is a difference it is so slight as to be meaningless, but i reckon it's the bike equivalent of the talk about the right formation to play in football - people love to chat don't they!
Re thighs - my gf gets bigger thighs from cycling, but then she's quite muscular (no sniggering at the back). Others ride bikes and don't get any bulk (v pendleton), I suspect it's largely physiological. I see this when I'm racing at herne hill - you seem to either get Wiggins-esque sticks or Bulgarian shot-putter-types.
