you can use your chain on your bike as a chain whip, I found a site that showed you how to do it with pictures step by step, after furious googling I cant find it so you are all subjected to my 5 year old drawings again! :D
Not for the faint hearted if you have a nice paint job, but you can just put a rag where the chain makes contact with the BB shell,
My advice is not to turn the wheel too much, get the cog tight by pedaling as normal then set up as above and give it a quarter turn (or less) then tighten up the lock ring.
