Floating liner

  • Hi All,

just a simple question: how much does the floating liner improve the waterproofness of a bag or a backpack? I know a number of makers go the extra mile to make stuff with a floating liner, whereas others do not... any personal experience?

would you carry your stuff in a bag that does not have a floating liner?

  • The Titanic?

  • I doubt it makes much of a difference.

My PAC doesn't have one and it's never leaked. I vaguely remember someone, perhaps Buffalo Bill, posting on here that their PAC was waterproof for about 2 years of messengering. So I wouldn't worry.

I was just looking at Chicago Wig bags and it doesn't look like they do either.

Surely a floating liner means less stitching for the manufacturer anyway? And hence lowers the cost of the bag. So it's just a 'feature' that is really just a benefit for the manufacturer. I don't make bags, so I'm not sure.

  • Truck tarp = Waterproof
Stitches = Difficult to waterproof (needs taping, which eventually peels off)

    Less stitching = More waterproof

  • You're trying to make it simpler than it really is, Rookie.

PACs have a truck tarp liner, within the 3 layers of cordura, and they are most definitely waterproof.

How long have you had your PAC for? I remember (although I cannot give ou the exact link) of someone switching from PAC to Bagaboo because their PAC leaked due to the non-floating liner... In any case I'm interested in a Freight Baggage backpack, which I know does not come with a floating liner.

    Cheers for the info though.

  • I've had it over a year now, but I'm not a messenger.
