Q's for camera people - fixing and flashes

  • Questions questions!

    1. My g/f has an old Olympus OM-1. She reckons the light meter is broken on it - anyone know wheres a good place to get this checked out and roughly what kind of price level she is looking at?

    2. Can anyone recommend me a decentish but not hugely expensive (i.e. canon own brand) external hot shoe flash for my canon g9? Have really no idea where to start with them or whats worth looking for...

  • I have always liked Kingsley Photographic on Tottenham Court Road (http://www.kingsleyphoto.co.uk/).

Not sure if they do Olympus but its worth asking.

I am a Nikon man myself so not sure about the flash. Would check out www.warehouseexpress.com for price.... much cheaper than most and good service.

On St Annes Court between Wardour & Dean.

They serviced my OM2n & put a new flash in my Contax T2 (really hard to find the parts these days)
They really know there stuff... Not always super cheap, but fair & they do a great job.

  • i'd say get an external light meter. its actually a bit better anyway because you can actually tell the light needed in the actual area rather than the camera spot check. plus theyre like £25

  • flash: canon 430x = £150

  • flash: canon 430x = £150

    +1

It may seem a bit OTT for a g9, but I put mine on my friends and it worked beautifully.

  • Thanks... will check those out...

They are olympus authorised and very good, they serviced a number of my OM cameras over the years (until I sold up and went digital...!). Give them a call, they'll be able to give you an estimate over the phone. With the OM-1, it might be worth servicing it anyway if you've never done this, the seals can wear and the mechanism needs a bit of TLC every now and then. Great camera though, I really abused mine and it never let me down!

However, if you're on a budget, I'd second the external lightmeter recommendation.

  • i wouldnt bother getting it fixed to be honest.

just get a new body off ebay. im pretty sure you can pick one up cheap.
