  • the cyclist was riding south down stoke newington high street; the hgv was either travelling the same route or turning right out of manor road (former route is more likely)
the collision occoured just beside stoke newington train station, where the entrance to the alley and the jehovas witnesses church is.
the police were investigating right underneath the lorry this seems to suggest that the woman went right under the truck when the collision occoured.

my thoughts go out to friends and family who are now going through such a terrible time.

  • This sucks. I reckon this makes at least 3 London cyclists killed by HGV/LGVs/lorries so far this year.

  • very sad.

  • Awww man.

Just round the corner from me.

    :>(

    Prayer goes out.

  • Dang..this is real bad. : (
    Take it EZ out there.

  • terrible news.

stupid question, but what's this 'ghost bike'?

  • ah, I see

but yes, definitely a good memorial/reminder. I've been forwarding the blind spots diagrams round to cyclist friends.

  • I am sure sheep wont mind donating one of his ebay frames to this. Especially seeing as it is so local.
Ill get on the case tomorrow.

  • should we have a whole new forum for 'Rider Down' incident? rather than it being scattered around in the General forum?

  • I'd rather like to think that it wouldn't be regular enough to need it. I hope not, anyway.

It won't be regular but it's an idea to have if we were to raise awareness, and the ghost bike thing as well, come to think of it i got a rusty old MTB bike in the shed...

anyone here can give away a couple of heavy chain to lock it up?

  • this is really sad, i can't help but think of a family out there having such a rough time tonight.

could someone please explain to ignorant me what the deal is with HGVs? why so dangerous? is it a visibility issue?

  • Cyclists have a habit of riding alongside them
Drivers have a habit of not checking their mirrors
When truck turns, bad things happen to cyclists.

you got it, it's usually the visibility issue since the HGVs have a lots of blind spot especially when it's trailing goods, that and some HGV driver don't have any consolation for cyclists as well (i.e. driving while chatting on phones, making a wrong move to get to another lane etc.)

    here's a quick example about the HGV's blind spot;

do you not use the cyclists own bicycle, sprayed white?
i mean - that would make more sense - it would be closer to the person concerned and be a more valid memorial... also it would require permission from the cyclists family, giving it added support...

however it would take a while to bring about as i imagine its now in an evidence lock up somewhere.

not to mention the bike will be mangled and im sure the family wouldnt want to see the actual bike their relative was killed on locked there :S

  • plus it's kinda a waste of a good bike when people have shitty bike that's no longer functioning in their shed, I mean, it's the idea that count really, a white bike as a memorial, regardless of how accurate/new/etc. it is.

  • I went past last night and there's now a ghost bike there, very prominently on the corner.

  • That was Small Brown Bikes doing.
    Good call.

  • I go by it every day.. +1 small brown bike

  • should put one on kentish town rd where the chic was killed a month back!

  • This is really awful news, but in a sense I'm so grateful for these threads as it constantly reminds me to not take my own visibility for granted.

  • Firstly my condolences,
secondly massive respect to Small Brown Bikes, and the project in general, makes the world seem a less bleak place some how.

Now a question, it looks like someone's "tagged" it, would it be improper to return it to white? There's no sign etc. does the tag have some meaning? Don't want to offend anyone, as I'm a newbie here, and as a "cyclist" I just live two minutes away and by pure coincedence joined the forum a couple of days ago, not really sure if this is the place to ask this so sorry if I've caused any offence.

  • it should have a sign, can you snap a photo of the tag?
