Both seem good to me. I would personal be tempted by the iro.

Truly no maintenance.
That's all you need to know.

That's all you need to know.
But where is the fun in that? I already got a Thomson Seatpost and Stem and some bars to go with the Surly.
I think that the build quality of the Surly will be better with better components that the Weinmann on Formulas.

• #5
I'd go for the IRO.
-
• #6
Seems like its being built up for you, cant you just get it less the parts you have already and for a bit cheaper?
Id go for the iro also

if you don't mind me asking who is offering that? sounds like a decent deal...I'd be interested in something very similar later this month if all goes well.

• #8
i like iro.
never ridden one, but i do like the look of them. -
• #9
This is the kind of set up I am after...maybe you could negotiate a price if a few were snapped up!
I want an IRO

I am suprised so many people are going with the IRO. I am pretty set on the Steamroller. Also I think some of the components for the IRO are dubious. I mean are Formula Hubs really better than Surly.
I guess it is becuse it is more of a track frame that the steamroller. It seems I was being sold a tarak bike, with lots of fun color options.
If anyone is interested I will send the guy an email and see if I can get a group buy discount. The guy is based in Philly (Bell's Bikes), and is happy to ship to the UK. I spoke to him on the phone, and he seemed pretty cool, so might be willing to ship it s a gift. Or even better used personal artefacts.
Let me know how many people are interested and I'll get you a price.

you have to get reamed by customs for a complete bike!
surly's are heavy mofo bash bikes. iro have a bit more finess!
-
• #12
Does that truly include shipping to the UK? I doubt it! Free shipping within the US for sure. If it is free shipping to the UK, please let me know. My in-laws are visiting at Christmas from the USA and I was going to buy a bike in a deal like this too. Free shipping to the UK would save me waiting for them to schlep my bike over here.

motoko - you can count me in as interested!

• #14
surly hubs aren't that great. Formula/iro/SystemEx/ambrosio/insert name here are good, solid, dependable hubs.
-
• #15
I will definitely be interested in this so let me know how it goes!
-
• #16
I am getting my steamroller shipped to the states where I will be living from the 26th of this month.
With the IRO which you are all so interested in, I think that it would be an extra $20 to $30 for UK Shipping.
-
• #17
That is very cheap for shipping to the uk, best I've been able to find is around £100 for a complete bike through Jensons, add on import duty and vat and it starts to loose its good value.
-
• #18
I'll need to check.
There might be the possibility of getting all the bikes shipped over together, therefore making it more affordable, then somehow having them distributed by someone from LFGSS in the UK

IRO has ugly cable stops. :(

IRO has ugly cable stops. :(
When you check to see if the shipping figure is correct, can you see if they will put together a Soma Rush frame/build?
Thanks!

sorry for bringing up a slightly older thread, but would you mind sharing who was sorting you out wiht the deal?
The shipping indeed seems rather cheap, might quite like to take advantage!
thanks

definitely IRO - crash replacemnet half price deal, better geometry than the steamroller proper BB height of 28.5 or 28 unlike the surly which is 26.5....point A you wont be catching on the ground by the toeclips you will hopefully have... point B better/quicker handling becuz of higher balance point, what else???....hmm better forks ie. less clearance so you dont need stupid long reach brake if you gonna use one......plus it looks less vintage:-).......what else???....chainline of formula hubs is standard 42mm so you dont have to do the maths as with the surlys........cane creek is good budget headset that is if its the 30 pounds s-2 one........rigida rims......DP18 once used to be the best deep section rim you could have got....not sure about nowadays but if they havent changed the design and all that.......did i forgot anything???
I was talking to a Wheel Builder about getting a set of phils laced on Deep Vs. In the weeks I was waiting for a reply I decided that I was gonna get a Surly Steamroller.
So yesterday I got an email asking if I was still interested, and I said no thanks I'm gonna get the OTP Surly.
I got this reply just now.
Am I right in thinking I'm better of with the Steamroller for $665 shipped from Jenson's? ;)
*We could easily do that for $650!
I have an even sweeter idea...we could do a custom Pake Track or IRO Mark V for less! (frames are similar to Surly quality, straight gauge 4130 cr-mo)
$635 would buy you this professionally assembled and shipped!
Pake (black) or IRO Mark V frame (black, red, navy blue)
Cane Creek C2 SEALED bearing headset (Upgrade from Surly) - Black or Silver
Weinmann DP18 Deep V Style Rims/DT Swiss Champion Spokes/Formula SEALED Track hubs (better quality than Surly, and high flange too!)
Continental Ultra Race Tire's Black 700x23 (Upgrade) or Vittoria Zaffiro Tires 700x23 or 700x25 (black, red, blue, yellow)
Michelin Tubes
Continental or Ritchey Re-usable rim strips
Shimano Dura-Ace,Surly or Soma Cog & Lockring (choice of gear ratio)
Sugino RD48T silver crankset w/bb (same) or upgrade to silver arm/black Messenger 48T ring for $20
KMC Z410 Chain (black,red,blue,yellow,silver,purple,pink,yellow,gold)
Promax seatpost (black or silver)
Velo Saddle (black) Upgrades available to virtually anything!
Drop bars, straight bars or Risers (black or silver)
Origin8 Threadless Stem (black or silver)
Deda Tape (20+color choices), or Oury Grips (black,hot pink,soft pink,red,yellow,white,clear,yellow,baby blue,celeste,blue,khaki brown,orange,purple)
If you'd like a brake, we have a black Tektro R520 caliper/Tektro lever that can be added for $40.
Let me know what you think. Next step here if you'd like to pursue this would be to let us know what size or how tall you are.
Then we can talk colors! or not!
Please keep in mind, every bearing point on this build is sealed! Truly no maintenance.*
