+1, I take the Merckx to London every other weekend on the Oxford Tube (though they usually limit the storage space to only 2 bikes per bus, so maybe better as a plan B if people want to travel back together as a group). http://www.oxfordtube.com/oxfordtube.php# (High Street will probably be the easiest stop to go from.)
Re: the £4 train tickets - check that there isn't engineering work between Oxford and Didcot (check the national rail website journey planner), because if there is they put you off on to a coach, but usually won't let you put a bike in the luggage hold :/
