at home in melbourne i have a couple of brooks saddles on touring bikes that belonged to my dad (one a bob jackson, the other a jack taylor). the one on the bob jackson has about 10 years' worth of daily riding worn into it... it's lovely.
but yeah, in melbourne.

depends how shapely your arse is. Fat arses get instant blubber comfort whereas bony arses feel the pain.

I'd like to try a race saddle, but have quite wide sit bones.
the b17 is the perfect width, but I've not found a modern plastic job that supports as well.
in the past I had
turbo
slr
san marco caymanothey all felt like shite
I'll be asking owners of rolls and regals for a sit soon

I own both a Charge spoon and a broken in B17, both are comfy in their own way. Charge was instantly comfy, but I prefer the B17 for longer rides.
I have recently laced the B17 so the sides don't flare out. It seems to make a difference and helps the seat keep its shape when broken in, but if I tighten the laces too tight the saddle starts to feel like riding on a drainpipe.

I heard that brooks are starting to produce pre-worn-in saddles for instant comfort.
I can only imagine what the wearing-in machine looks like. Perhaps a synthetic wooden arse on the end of a vibrating hydraulic ram?

The status of my grey tourney brooks is wearing quite nicely... the grey has worn through in places to a nice black... the leather is even softening. I think polo is a good way to soften the saddle... i'll give it another month maybe and it'll be spot on.
"....I used to messenger in Aus with 4 kangaroos, a dozen koalas and 3 crates of beer strapped to my back and all I had was an old piece of bark due to the infamous saddle embargo of 1872...."
yeah yeah yeah....we've heard it all before.....
