I'll stick with my star-tac for now.

it has a scientific calculator!!
that's way better than a decent camera or the ability to record video ;)
however, i do think the GPS and HSDPA, combined with the ability to write third-party apps, could allow some pretty interesting location-y type stuff.
depends on pricing and contract. two-year contracts make me cry tears of hot indignation.

I've put my 8GB iPhone and my flat mates 16GB iPhone on eBay. Hopefully they'll sell before most people realise the new ones are coming out.

Ohh the Iphone they should have released last year.
Theres going to be a stack of 18 month O2 contract holders feeling like a bunch of cunts right now.

In the US AT&T are saying that existing iPhone users can upgrade to the 3G version, but they have to start a new 24-month contract. be interesting to see if O2 do likewise.
aren't they sposed to be opening it up to more carriers?

yup my blackberry does that already. Well by using googlemaps, i can pinpoint my location with up to a 3 metres range...not bad at all.

yeah there's a few nokias with GPS as well (and a lot of the new range coming out over the next few months) and a bunch of OEM windows mobile devices... but it's the combination of GPS plus a large third-party developer community (which Apple has, and BlackBerrys lack) that really makes it interesting.
it's all about the software.

So does my iPhone!
To be honest, it's the software that seems to be the biggest advance, and that is free to current owners? I wouldn't be bothered about 3G, ok, it's faster, but then again, i have lived in my new flat and been able to go online without any local network using EDGEW and it's been quicker than some wireless networks i've been on!
I for one, will not be bothering to upgrade.

I'm definitely going to get one. I've wanted one for a while, but been holding off because of the price. The price being halved, plus all the extra features, has totally convinced me now :)

3G is going to hit the battery life pretty hard. That said, my contract's up in July so I will probably end up getting one anyway because they are just so much nicer to use than any other smartphone.

I always wonder how Apple measure battery life. My Macbook allegedly has 4.5 hours, but I've never had more than three out of it and that's with the screen dimmed to barely visible.

As with all new innovations, wait for the reviews - then if it looks good get one - why be the guinea pig.

I'm lucky if I can get 1 1/2 hours life out of my Mac Powerbook! Grrrr! Nice phone though, and finally in white!

You think? The iPhone isn't open yet for a start. And as someone who's worked in the open mobile software industry for the last ten years I'm still waiting to see a successful application that people actually pay for after they've bought their phone.
