Wheel build on to disc/gear hub?

Posted on
  • A friend has a Cannondale Bad Boy with hub gears and disc brakes. She really fancies red rims to offset the black stealth look. Now seeing myself as an experienced wheel builder (ok - built one that hasnt fallen apart yet!) I rashly offered to change the rims to red deep vs.
Am i letting myself in for a world of pain here? Anything thats going to catch me out with the hubgear/disc combo?

  • As long as the spoke length is not too different you should be fine. This says it as well as I could so copy and past for this reply.

    7. I want to swap my rim and keep everything else the same do I need new spokes? Is there an easy way to do it?

          A. In this case you can get away with just a simple trick. Loosen all the spokes in the old wheel till they very nearly come undone entirely. Then just put the new rim alongside the old rim. Be careful to line the valve holes up and make sure the spoke holes are "offset" the same way. Then just switch one spoke at a time until the new rim is in place and the old one is off. Finally just follow the last part of the wheel build guide to get some initial tension in. You can get away with this because all the spokes stay in the same orientation as before so they do not have to take on a radically new lay.

  • thanks tommy - i'm guessing that the spokes will need changing if i go with a deep section rim, just a bit worried about having a disc brake - does it put more force on the spokes....does the tension need to be different to a rim brake, I wonder?

  • I guess it would be like a fixed hub. All the braking force is transmitted from the hub to the spokes to the rim to the tyre with the maximum force being just before skidding, fixed or disk hub would be the same. The bigger difference is the dish created by the casset which can't be avoided.. Just playing things out in my head here but my logic seems to make sense.

  • That makes sense....also fortunately the hub gear means no dishing!
Right....red deep vs are on the shopping list!
