It's not as simple as that, it's a personal thing. There is no gearing that is suitable - some people ride very high gears like 48/14, which I would find incredibly uncomfortable, for example. However, a good ratio to start with would be 48/18. You might want to go higher (buy a smaller sprocket, say 17), or lower (19).

I use 42x16 and its pretty easy on my commute...

im 48/15 but when i move to the city im probably going to get a 16.

42x16 is similar to 48x18 i think...
here, try http://software.bareknucklebrigade.c...it.applet.html. In terms of gear inches, you'd probably want to be around the high 60s and low 70s.

yeah the difference is negligible they're both 70ish in terms of gear inches.

Hi all, this forum is fantastic!
Im building a bike with a flip flop hub and just need advice on what sprokets teeth things i need to make the gearing suitable for commuting around central london. Just would like to know from you lot what is good in your experience for this area.
