A tyre within a tyre?

  • A friend just told me of this diy approach he has taken to skidding through tyres and puncture protection...
He cut the wire bead off a tyre and placed that between the inner tube and tyre.
    Crazy,Genius or been done before?

  • too much weight in the wheels. it'll remove the responsiveness of the ride too. bad idea in my book.

  • Old school messenger trick. It's good fun to watch the inner tire try to restrain the tube from blowing out of an inch and half skid-hole! Good fun to ride as well...

I have my polo bike set up like this. Just don't try it on the front.

Been done before - but you are adding anything up to another 300g of rotational mass to each wheel which will make even a good wheelset feel like you are riding a £79 Halfords full suspension dole fetcher.

A better solution would be to run a puncture protection strip.

  • Slime. £5.99 at Evans.

    But . . . slime won't help with skidding through a tyre.

  • I used to use pucture protection strips. They are harder than the inner tube (obviously) and eventually they used to wear a hole into the inner tube and puncture it! I was a bit baffled when it first happened. It used to take about the same length of as it took to wear out a tyre.

I didn't used to skid though, couldn't afford the tyres.

  • I used to run twin tyres on my BMX but it was more to prevent p_nct_res from the massive ride-ending thorns around where I lived. Pain in the arse to fit.

it would look pretty cool when the tyre bursts though!

Makes for a bumpy ride once the inner tyre starts poking out in a few places though. Ive still got one of your old bontragers inside my back wheel. Its completely puncture proof..

    Amazing!

A roadie mate of mine does this with spesh Armadillos on his training bike. They're heavy as fuck, and give very little cushioning, but come race day he reckons the payback is huge.

The inner tyre needs to be 23mm and the outer a 25 or 28.

    Some sort of resistance training?

    And I never had a problem putting a 23 inside a 23.
