Wanted: Should I buy this?

Posted on
  • Hello all - just building up my first fixed gear and after splashing loads of cash on a wheelset from a fellow forum member I am at the stage where I need to buy a crankset, the rest of the parts I have collected on the cheap from various sources so am pretty much there.
I am aware that the crankset is a pretty important component in the grand scheme so price shouldn't be shirked on too much but I really, really need to keep to a budget on this.
Does anyone know what the Sugino RD cranks are like? I have found a 165 set with a 48T ring (exactly what I want) for £50?
How does this sound and can I do better for the price on that spec?
I know Sugino have a great rep for the 75 but this is out of my budget I'm afraid...
    All comments appreciated

  • It's an ok price if they're in top condition.

You can get good chainline with it, and spare chainrings shouldn't be a problem.

    Look here

    for matching kit.

  • Nice one - thanks for the link, that will be v.helpful indeed. The price quoted was for brand new - do you think that is a good crank/price for a first project? Most I've seen look cheap and nasty or are well out of reach price wise!

  • FSA crank set from kiwi cycle...nothing fancy but it works

  • Unless you're Chris Hoy, pretty much any crank will be perfectly serviceable.

I think the only cheaper option is the RPM at about thirty notes. I used it myself with no problems.

I'd invest in a quality rear hub before a bling crank.

    With the benefit of hindsight...

  • FSA/RPM is the same thing, btw...

  • Thanks - definately not chris hoy, just looking for a solid enough bike to ride everywhere really, no time trials or anything - currently got an iro fixed rear hub - I'll check out those fsa ones too...

  • Holy moly, could i possibly ask you where you found these RD's for 50 notes, i too need exactly the same crank setup for my first fixed gear. Also i've seen the FSA/RPM cranks and the chainring is 'dished' (so i've been told) so you'd have to bare that in mind (Kiwicycles say 110mm jis bb).
    Good luck with the bike.

  • Chainring is dished, 110mm JIS suits.

You can bolt a standard chainring to the inside of the spider, but it's unlikely the expense would be justified.

The Rd's come up on eBay regularly. They're standard on several OTP bikes and are often upgraded. Otherwise import one from the States.
