New Bikehut

  • A new bikehut was opened in st pauls today by nicole cooke - the ad in the metro went on all about how it was run by cyclists for cyclists, but nowhere mentioned that it was run/owned by halfords - i was wondering if this blatant distancing act is justified? - is bikehut a good shop? or is it just as shit as a normal halfords, different only in appearance?

the website, for those interested, although not much on it in terms of products, but the about me section says: "And because you’ll be joining us at the very beginning, you will have the opportunity to shape Bikehut’s customer offering and develop the business as you see fit."
surely the customer offering will be pretty much exclusively inner London office workers and maybe the ocasional tourist? i cant imagine much more than that treking the distance just to go there...

  • ...when you click on the link it does say: Halfords bikehut : home
but reckon it'll be just another evans/cyclesurgery supplying all the fluro office folk.

    kerching!

no no - the website is cool for that - its just the ad in the paper didn't mention it at all - not even in the "blah blah is a registered trademark" section
i dunno why i was i was looking out for it, but the fact that my suspicions were confirmed suggested something that i seemingly half hoped was true :-P

yeh - my thoughts really, just hoping on the possibility that it could be something more than that... :-(

  • free inner tubes and tyres for races.

could simply be a gimmic, but seems like a nice touch for their staff anyway.

  • you'd think it would be a good bit of advertising for Halfords, maybe they really do know they're crap!

get in there quick n use all their tools and free air before they charge!

  • the ad comes with coupons for 10% off bikes + 20% off **selected **accesories
runs out 22nd june - i guess thats when they start charging :-P

  • Bikehut isn't Halfords. it's a sort of franchise, although how that works I don't know. The one in Putney is excellent, is full of Condors, Konas, and Chris Boardman's bikes. It's a pleasant relief from Trek and Specialised. I also got a 6' chain and lock for £19 reduced 'cos they reckoned the lock wasn't secure enough. They also have an open plan workshop and a lot of tools. The guy I spoke to made it quite plain that there was a big difference between them and Halfords. Also bought a front light which you recharge from a usb port. Definitely recommended. Although they may all be slightly different.

"And because Bikehut is **backed **by one of the UK’s best known, long established retail names..."

    ah - i see :D

im on the market for chains at the moment - model name?

They also have an open plan workshop

u mean like @ blb, where the mech is working right next to the front desk? or is there more to it than that?

Sorry bad photo, it's called 'Lox'. No the workshop is at the back and the shop floor is really big, about 30' x 60. It's all recently kitted out and very clean. I wanted a BB removal tool, and they had a Shimano, but not Campag. Guy was really helpful and suggested all kinds of other places I might find it.'

  • but what makes the workshop open plan? is it that they restrict all mechanising to that area, and so have every one developing the techniques together through osmosis?

+how is the lock holding up? it good?

  • those lox locks from experience, and decent quality chains, but the padlocks arent amazing, oh and the St. Pauls store will be offering various give-aways and bits, and are awaiting a shipment of singlespeed and fixed parts/accessories!

  • I just want to thank Harvey at Bikehut for the excellent service, my local is sometimes a bit to cool..
