That would be wheel-truing if you used a spoke key. If a wheel is true I'd say don't mess with it. Why do you need to move the rim 5mm? Can't you just move the wheel?

I’m converting an old bike to single speed. I removed the cassette (screw on) and replaced with a single shimano freewheel. Unfortunately this means my chain line is no longer straight, so I respaced the rear axle.

tighten up one side 1/4 of a turn and loosen the other side 1/4, repeat maybe 2-3 times :)
or i'll give it a go at any of drinks!

1/2 turn ;-)
Remove the rim tape to be aware that half of the spokes may end up raised and poking into the rim.
Also you may ruun out of threading on the spokes you are tightening.
Usually it's easy, even Dogsballs can do it, outside a pub, surrounded by haranguing drunken cyclists. -

Cheers. Sounds simple enough. However if it all goes horribly wrong I might have to take you up on your offer.
If the spokes do end up poking out, what’s the best solution? File them down?

dremel / new spokes? filing will not get them 'below the surface' so to speak.
I base this advice on no practical experience. -

start and finish at the valve hole so you know when you have completed one revolution.

good point.
moving a rim over 5mm, you will only change spoke length by 1mm or 2, or 2-3 threads. i severely doubt it would poke through.

Thanks for all the advice. Fingers crossed the spokes keep their heads down.

How did you get on? I'm thinking of doing it too.

its important to check the length of the spokes.
Some wheels use shorter spokes on the driveside.
So youll find it pretty impossible to redish it. If the wheel is cassette, then its better to simply get a SS cog. -

thats what I need to do as well, got my spoke key now. gonna give it a go tonight, hope I dont f*?k it up!
I need to move the rim about 5mm. Can redishing be achieved with only a spoke wrench and patience? Considering my bike tinkering experience is limited is this likely to be a recipe for disaster?
