Apparently [pub knowledge] pigeons' brain-to-eye processing time is way faster than humans - ie if you showed them a movie it would look like a slide show - so as we approach them we don't appear to be moving that fast so they still have plenty of time to finish their kfc / mcdonalds etc before flying away.
