Doesn't really sound like this has anything to do with riding fixed nor with her being a "girl" (except that that's important for the trying to get some part of the story). Sounds to me like she doesn't know how to ride a f*cking bike and shouldn't be getting on one. Maybe she as balance issues. Now if you said you were in San Francisco, the 'hill' may actually be an excuse.
She was probably embarrassed, I would be. If you weren't totally turned off by her blaming, you should have made a move with some sort of "How is it possible you're still so frickin cute all scratched up?" line.
