Transporting a frame whilst riding a bike

  • hi all...so I have to transport a frame to a friend's house this evening...obviously I would rather do it on my bike than get on public transport...however, I am worried about securing it properly to my back and keeping it safe on the ride...does anyone have any good strapping techniques to use, or maybe I should just sling it over my shoulder?...it is a v. nice frame and so I worry about having an accident with it on and damaging it, so perhaps I would be advised to just get the tube down...?

    Any thoughts appreciated...

  • I have just tie it onto my rucksack in the past. If it sticks out wide on my right then I tie a red l.e.d onto the bit that sticks out and set it to flash so people don't drive too close. Just don't try narrow gaps.

  • I biked a few miles a couple of months back with a heavy-as-hell frame. Bent two spokes and had a bit of a spill in the process. I was just holding it with my left hand 'cause the pump-holding-braze-on-things were stabbing me in the back of the neck when I put it over my shoulder. Overall it was as shit experience. Take public transport unless you have a bag you can strap it to safely (safely for you, the bike, and the people/cars who will be around you).

  • inner tube is useful to make a strap.

  • a) stick it under the flap on your XL courier bag. seattube horizontal across the flap, headtube dangling behind / above your head (careful!)
    b) wear it like a courier bag. Headtube on your shoulder + top tube at the front works well I find. + wear a bag under it for back-cushioning.
    c) zip-tie or similar to a sturdy, large, rucksack.
I prefer (b), seen jonny do (a) and dogsballs do (c)

  • if you carry it over your shoulder, as you cycle the two frames will smash chunks of paintwork out of each other if you leave with two pimped bikes you'll arrive with two beaters strap it to a rucksack or something similar

or put two wheels on it and ghost ride it probaly the easiest way

  • bit of DIY req'd...

but seriously... if it's that nice, surely makes sense not to tempt fate.

  • Pay a courier to do it. ;-)

  • follow shinscar's advice. Strap it to shinscar, then carry shinscar on your back.

  • I do it all the time. Strap it to a big bag and avoid the gaps. Maybe slow down a little compared to normal speed. Patience is key when riding with a frame/wheels/big things

  • Thanks for the advice folks, I appreciate it...will try some of those techniques before I leave to see how it feels, but if it aint comfortable or I don't feel confident, I will just tube it down...

  • i hate public transport if youre gonna carry your frame be prepared cable ties...inner tubes...packing tape and keep to the quieter roads.

  • Put it over your shoulder, forks at the bottom on your right hand side.
Seat tube sitting on your left shoulder
this will have the frame sit close to your body with the rear stays above your
head and out of the way of hitting things.
Frame should sit pretty secure but put your bag strap over it if you can.
I've done this over 6 times across london no problems.

  • Or just tie/strap to your bag and make sure you have wheel clearance.

    Jobs a good-n.

  • yeah, i just shoulder sling now.
unless I'm going a really long distance when my archie comes into its own.

  • shoe lace, string, belt

  • i'm with scrapper. i have carried frames aplenty this way. i even carried my whole bike over 10 miles like this. the main thing is avoid rush hour traffic.

  • infact, couldnt you just stick your body throgh the main part of the frame wearing it like a single strap bag? maybe wrap a towel around the front of the frame so it doesnt dig into your shoulder?

  • +1

just toured my new frame around london that way. it's a cinch.

  • cable tie it to your regular frame side by side. It would be just like riding a bike with tubes twice as thick. There is no possible way this could fail to work.

  • lol yeah do this ^^^^^

  • we should have a night ride where we all bring a frame with us see who can race the fastest carrying a frame that has to be the only way to resolve this one

  • HTFU!

A london messenger did a night ride to Camber Sands with his lorry-mashed frame over his shoulder - and then threw it into the sea.

I rode with my track bike (the whole thing, wheels bars c/set) from my flat by Columbia Road to London Bridge station over my shoulder (didn't want to twosie for fear of puncturing the tubs).

If you put frame protectors or pipe lagging on the tubes, you should find that the braze-ons don't bother you so much.

  • I think we rode past each other doing this the other sunday on my way to the open toolbox
