Boring beater banter

  • now that i have spent all the money i don't have on an expensive bike, i have found that i need a really cheap and shitty but rideable (and ideally fixed) one for actually going places on. one i can lock up and feel confident will not get pinched.

does anyone have anything knocking about? will consider shagged-out langsters, bad conversions, cack road bikes etc. no unipacks though. i was thinking £100 or less.

    thanks.

  • gumtree is your best bet. i've got an apollo halfords MTB for locking up in places. it's the worst bike ever.

  • Why not spend the £100 on protection so you can ride your beauty instead?

  • ^yeah he's got a point tho, if you're leaving it at a tube station or outside a pub for hours, parts might get nicked off it, power tools, etc.

  • yesterday this went for 150 and would've fit the bill well, though perhaps a bit too nice. i don't want to become attached.

  • i've thought about locks but i just wouldn't be comfortable leaving it anywhere all day.

  • Yea, sorry. I tend to forget that a lot of people have to leave their bikes locked up to sidewalk bikestand, a street sign or something all day long. Meanwhile autos get NCP and company garages, which it seems like I've heard of a few not allowing bikes!?

  • ^better than my beater!

  • what size do you want. I picked up a Raliegh SS (courtesy of somebody) last week, that, the more I think about it, is not really going to do the job I want it to.
He didn't charge me anything for it, it's about 23'' I guess. Let me Know

  • that sounds a good size, about a 57cm yeah? any pics or whatever?

  • Extra deterrents (with bonus functionality) are mudguards and a rack, and plenty of road/off-road grime.

  • where did that pictured bike above go for £150?

Big with the Polish/Slovakians/Latvians on my estate (sorry to roll them in). I bet not one of them cost more than a few €uros, and they seem quite fast too when ridden across and against the traffic.

  • yesterday this went for 150 and would've fit the bill well, though perhaps a bit too nice. i don't want to become attached.

yeah, that would probably get nicked.
defeats the point of a beater!
i reckon a shit paint job, but nice bearings, etc. is the way to go. looks worthless, but it's still nice to ride.
my flatmate just took rattle cans of varying colours to his really expensive bmx. it looks terrible! success!

  • I have an alf webb frame, guaranteed not to get nicked. Why? Because any would be thief would begin uncontrollably vomiting the closer they got to the paint job. However, it is just a frame, and i'd probably want about £80 for it to recoup at least some of what I spent (i bought it brand new, rode it for about a month).

    PM me if interested
