South Ken to Harefield (A40)

Posted on
  • Hey folks, anyone cycled the A40 out west? Need to get to a training conference at Harefield Hospital from South Ken (Royal Brompton Hospital) next Monday and thought I would bike it.

According to map its around 20 miles there - just wondered how cycle unfriendly the route is or does anyone have alternative (safer) suggestions / routes. Thanks.

  • I ride every day Acton to Uxbridge which is about 6 miles less but the same route. The A40 is fine for all the way to Uxbridge but it's well windy and you have to swap sides all the time.

I'd go Hammersmith-Chiswick-Acton-Ealing-Southall-Hayes-Uxbridge-Harefield. Much better route!

  • yup, i'd do the same

Thanks devoneil - so basically get to Chiswick then onto the A4020 all the way to Uxbridge?

  • yup, hit the uxbridge road,

  • A variant on the routes suggested

Uxbridge Road to Hayes (actually very near Hillingdon Cycle Track) then take Yeading Lane NOT Hayes bypass (A312) until joining A4180. Follow through Ruislip the pick up signs for Harefield. Distance from South Ken station to Harefield 31Km according to Autoroute.

Hope this helps and it may be slightly more picturesque.

  • Mmmm, call in at The Fisheries after for a pint too.
