The bolt with the spring attached to it turns independantly of the rest of the tool into the bb axle. The spring then acts to hold the splined attachment of the tool securely into the splines of the bb.
Fantastic tool, but expensive....and....you need seperate versions for standard shimano, octalink/isis, old campag/fag, newer campag/miche and external bearings bb's!
I find also that sometimes extra leverage can be useful in the form of a long steel pipe.
