  • Italian b.b shell is 70 mm wide.

Yep, well it's 69.5mm (so maybe it was 70mm before facing?).

Am I right in thinking this will have no impact on chainline as my BB will still be centered and the spindle length is what counts.

  • ah, probably firefox being weird.

yup, the spindle length is independant from the bb shell width.

  • @eyebrows, are you using firefox on OS X?

  • yup.

A bit of extra width never hurt anyone.

  • so do you know why it does this then? just curious...

Hover the cusor over bb and you will see a description pop up that says bottom bracket. VB must have set it up, as it does the same for HHSB

That's great ! :) VB is a bit of a genius on the side I reckon, sneaking around in the background making stuff happen, good stuff.

Now let's see that feature in Safari too !!

On a HHSB related note: (look under Regional Idiomatic Variants)

Cheers for the offer Brian, I will see how I get on at my local first (Cycle surgery down the end of my road in Camden).

    :)

  • There is something very wrong about those high end carbon parts siting so close to that wrench.

  • You never get them off with a chisel or drift

I don't like your attitude RPM.

    sorry, I meant to say:

"you never get them off with a chisel or a drift, unless you twat the fuck out of it with a massive hammer"

  • That tacx tool is good, the key being that it stays attached to the axle to prevent it slipping off and either destroying the splines on the bb, or those on the tool. A big adjustable will work, but a 32mm headset spanner fits perfectly and usually offers the same amount of leverage...some cheap or slightly knackered adjustable spanners can slip off the tool easily.
Alternatively, get one of these mothers....

  • ^ whats that?

  • The bolt with the spring attached to it turns independantly of the rest of the tool into the bb axle. The spring then acts to hold the splined attachment of the tool securely into the splines of the bb.
Fantastic tool, but expensive....and....you need seperate versions for standard shimano, octalink/isis, old campag/fag, newer campag/miche and external bearings bb's!
I find also that sometimes extra leverage can be useful in the form of a long steel pipe.

  • Cheers for all the input ladies.

After an hour of gladiatorial combat the inverted threading of the evil Italian BB cups have given in (I got a Parktool octalink tool like the one Brian has above) - my frame is now free for stage two - the puppy killing stage.
