• Well, the title is self-explantory, after I aquired my new bike, I'm a bit more paranoid about it getting stolen than my old Peugeot, so I use the heavy chain lock from my sister's old Vespa (that incidentally got stolen, not locked mind), is it alright for me to leave the lock in certain location around London? so I don't have to carry it with me all the way as it's heavy as fuck?

I've planned to leave a couple of locks from King's Cross, Notting Hill and Shoreditch.

  • I do this in Oxford- not helpful really, but I have three heavy duty chains.
One at the lab, one at the library, and one at the sports ground.
Makes sense to me- I just carry a kryptonite tiny lock around.
Having said that, there are tonnes of videos on the tube of you suggesting big chains are at best incredibly ineffective, and you're just better off getting a lock that thieves can't access (i.e. small and cleverly locked up).

  • I used to have 5 or 6 locks scattered around London - I think a couple might still be out there - worked well for me.

  • I have one of those small kryptonite that I always carry with me, my main concern is usually theft who saw a lock and assumed that an expensive bike will be there at a particular time of day, or that's probably paranoid.

    Good move.

my main concern is usually theft

I too fear the hand that wishes to take.

who saw a lock and assumed that an expensive bike will be there at a particular time of day

    Not me.

    or that's probably paranoid.

    Yes/know.

  • good plan, but the problem is that the lock is out in all weathers and picks up the grime / diesel / kebab grease / piss of London, so when you go to use it, it will leave nastyness on you / your bike.

Also, beware of the dangers of locking to railings (the old, front of building, square type of railings). Most of them are not tempered steel but cheap iron, and break when you kick them (particularly the ones that have rusted at the joint at the bottom). So you'll end up losing the bike and lock at the same time.

Also, what happens when you arrive at your destination to find that the council have removed your lock?

  • piss of London

    ha!

the piss of london is certainly to be avoided

  • better than the piss of cardiff

  • without a doubt

  • Also, what happens when you arrive at your destination to find that the council have removed your lock?

currently my lock is outside South Wimbledon station, and the railing outside is heavily used by cyclist, so the worry of the council removing the lock is less.

  • I've been going past a set of bike railings on High Holborn everyday for the past year or so. There's a bike lock on one of them that has not had a bike attached to it ever in my recollection. Guess Camden Council have more important things to do than monitor how much left bike locks are used..

  • the councils don't care for locks ar chain lock up agains rails, they don't care for the all bike, that sometimes looks to be there for years, so why bother for something so small as a lock.

  • Westminster council painted my abus blue to match the lamp past. It has its perks.

  • ^lol

  • It's really not that bad to carry a large lock around with you, I've got a kryptonite fogetaboutit chain and mini D, it feels heavy when your first start riding but then you get used to it and you barely notice it. just pop it round your waist with a climbing cabrina
