Carrot on a stick

I don't ride my bike nearly enough, because as a postgrad student I spend all my time at home working. Furthermore, my departments building is about a mile away, so close in fact that I walk there a lot. As I always have so much to do I also don't get out much socially (sad but true), even though i regularly stay in to work but then end up doing none. I have so far missed nearly all the forum rides and drinks, which I am gutted about.

My bike sits here next to me and I'm constantly eyeing it up and thinking about going out riding. Sometimes I feel like it's the only thing I have to look forward to (on a day-to-day basis) and in a way in helps me concentrate and get things done. It's a carrot on a stick. Does anyone here get what I'm on about? Any other bored-as-fuck students on here? I love what I do, but being stuck at home all day is miserable.

Any sympathy or advice?! HTFU I suppose.

  • fully agreed. when i'm revising, i really look forward to lunch, it means i get to ride my bike for all of 2 mins to the grocery store (should probably just walk). almost lunch time!

  • you can't work *all *day, so why not break your day with a few spins? i used to work from home and ride with my girl to her work in the morning just for the exercise and fun of it. plus the odd ride at lunch, the nip out in the afternoon, you know? think of it like a fag break. :D

  • i too do these little rides up to the shop... it's hardly worth it by the time you've locked up (the bike). if i go further afield i feel like i'm slacking off and so it becomes only half enjoyable.

i can't wait to get back into a job, work hard, get paid, interact with people, get some routine and alos have proper guilt-free free-time.

  • I've been stuck in revision mode for ages now. But at least I don't have my bike.
Have hardly left my room for 4 weeks!

  • I'm in the opposite position, my lab is a 20min fast ride away, so I manage to squeeze some riding time in. But once I start my job (consultancy, living out of hotels on weekdays) I won't be able to ride at all until the weekends :/

  • I work from home, or work overseas all over the place. So some weeks I'm out on my bike every night. Some weeks I don't touch it till the weekend.

  • You could set up some lunch dates that are a decent distance away, work up an appetite and you'll be fresher for the afternoon. And the evenings are getting longer, there's a million reasons to get out there. Quit whinning or sell me your ride!

  • i finish my exams tomorrow. i cant wait. gonna cycle down to RP and around it a few times on sunday, hangover permitting, then once a few mates are finished with their exmas in a couple of weeks its brighton time.
i used to look forward to cycling up havestock hill from camden to get to the library. its 3 miles.

  • Good luck with the exams (and hangover)!

  • Im not a student, but I am with you bro...so bored at my work, and my beautiful bike is right next to my desk, and I look at it longingly, wishing I could just go out and ride...hehe, sometimes I slot a little ride in during my lunch break...my colleagues think Im weird though, but its a small price to pay...

  • a friend of mine who worked from home used to get up and cycle half an hour to a coffee shop. Have a coffee and then ride back and start work.
He really liked his routine but I'd struggle if I knew I could just stay in bed instead

  • I changed career aged 30, jacked in my job, and went back to uni for a year. Thought it'd be a right laugh but a couple of months in I was going out of my mind and didn't know why. The missus said, "you're lonely" and she was right. Studying at home is a killer so mix up your habits. I started cycling to college and back most days just to (sit in the boring library and) stretch my legs, breathe some air, and see people...

good call, loneliness is the feeling! sounds daft but my favourite thing to do is to go somewhere busy like the west end when i have spare time. when i'm there i feel like i'm recharging just by being around all the people.

  • all you home bods should arrange coffee or lunch, i did with carlitos when i was at home, it was great, sit and watch people, ride, eat and then back to work. neat.

  • that's actually a good idea. anyone?

  • No matter how hard you work/study you can and should justify at least one evening out a week. So, make it part of your routine to come along to a drinks night on here once a week. If you're skint just get soda water in the pub. It might sound odd but it's not, I stopped drinking booze (just wanted a clean-out/detox) about 7 weeks ago and regularly go to the pub with friends, I just don't have a pint and if I'm fed up with orange/lemonade/tonic will have a soda water. Do it, it sounds like you'd get a lot out of being around some friendly people - everyone needs to be good to themselves no matter how dedicated they are to their work/whatever.

    :)

  • i'd love to, but i know myself, i wouldn't actually go back to work after a bit of socialising. sorry :(

oh i'm definitely not skint! whatever gave you that idea?!

  • Come to west end beers tonight. We are meeting at the John snow at 19:00 and riding from there.

  • if your not skint you can buy me a pint cos i am

  • jebus you're making me a bit jealous (and nostalgic). i now spend all say in an office or faffing about the country going to dull metings with and i'm trying to train myself no NOT go out riding then drinking then drunk-riding home pretty much every night.

my legs are in good shape but i've got bags under my eyes, my liver's probably begging for mercy and i'm over my overdraft limit.

can't remember the last time i turned up at the pub not wearing spds.

*eyes glass of red and chain-stain on inside of right calf.

i should probably go to bed.

good luck with the studies though.

  • fuck i work at a bike shoppe and i don't get on my bike as much as i wish. we even have incentives to ride to work, but i just am overwhelmed writing and what not, i'm in the same boat.

but i did ride for 15k today.

  • fuck i work at a bike shoppe

Are you from the 15th century?

  • oh i'm definitely not skint! whatever gave you that idea?!

In that case I need a bung, £500 should do it. Cheers.

(Just because I've got a mate who's gone back to full time studying as a mature student and he's skint. But if you're not then you have even less excuse for not socialising more!)
