Track nuts

  • did a search but couldn't find anything so here goes...

The tracks on my formula hubs have rounded off quite a lot and today whilst fitting some tugs I noticed that the bit between the nuts and the track end/drop-out (i'm wanting to say washer?) seems to have cracked... is that possible? I gather the nuts on formulas are jarg quality and go rusty anyway.

Who does good track nuts and does anyone have any recommendations? hubjub do dura-ace ones but £9.50 a pair seems somewhat expensive. they aren't to easy to find elsewhere. Finally, Freshtripe had some coloured ones for sale... anyone know what they were? would like them to match my crimp.

  • there's a few eBay shops like charliethebikemonger that do em - just type in 'track nuts' and they'll be there at 1.99 a pair or thereabouts

  • Formula ones do go horribly rusty its true. I'm trying to resist the urge to get some more myself.

One thing I'd look out for though - coloured ones may be alu instead of steel, which means they'll be softer and hence may round off quicker than the standard formula ones.

  • If you want the quick option, halfords do them for like 1.99 i think.
i had them before and they seemed okay, got a bitt rusty though.

  • £9.50 is a small price to pay for slavism..

  • get a descent round ended spanner and they wont round off

  • if you want some to tide you over, i've got some new plain ones kicking about somewhere.
is there a separate washer between the nut and the frame? there shouldn't be...
or do you mean the nuts which have a kind of built in washer thing?

  • I also need some nuts.

When I puts (yes I arranged it so that it sounds like 'nuts') my chain tungs (just a mistake this time) on - they take up some of the axle length that protrudes from the drop outs - so my Dura Ace nuts don't get much axle to hold onto - so I need thinner nuts (than the Dura Aces).

I could just use the DA nuts and thread them as far on as they go, but the first 1/3 that goes on is threadless built in washer thinghy - so I might only be engaging 2 or 3 threads - ya' get me ?

Anyway - anyone know where I can find thin(ish) track nuts - Charliethebikemonger looks to be nutless.

  • These look to be a bit thinnerer, but there's no dimensions on the site. Also they're rather costly, and the shipping costs aren't mentioned.
    So no help really.

  • +1 for round ended spanner. Im still using the cheapos that came with my on-one hub. Give them a coat of grease, and they wont rust. Halfords will sell you a cheap and cheerful pair of 10mm track nuts, and pick up a 15mm ring spanner whilst your there.

  • tynan: are your tugs on the outside of the trackends or something? pic?

DA nuts are lovely and have the official hippy likes them so you will fscking use them if you know what's good for you seal of approval. :)

couldn't you use one chain tug and offset the rear axle? what chain tugs are they? they sound prettty thick to take up so much of the axle.

Cheers Cheesy, hard to tell, they may only be a mm or so thinner than standard DA nuts (?)

    Yes !

I could but my hub is nice a smooth running, I don't want to have to loosen it off and reset it + asymmetry makes me feel queer.

Time to get the camera out . . . .

  • get some mks tugs then tynan..

slave and very thin. then you can use D/A nuts and laugh in the faces of the oppressed.
