  • I have now got hold of a some velosteel hubs, and have just built one up with a Mavic Open Pro 36h. . only had about a day on it so far, but i like it, it doesn't lock up unless you really want it to, so is pretty good at modulating your speed. Lovely bit of kit too, though it weighs a fair bit. The hub comes with a bracket for the frame so you can attach the clutch arm. though this isn't particularly nice, but their are loads of nice brackets out there you could use instead. The hub is very well made - great for a ss knock around bike.

Provided i am free i will bring it to westie drinks on thursday, and try and get some pics up too

If you have got hold of multiple velosteel coaster brake hubs and would be willing to sell one, I would be interested.

  • same here, theres a NOS sturmey archer one on ebay at the moment

want a good one though, a little bit afraid of complete loss of braking whilst going downhill fast.

  • Yeah VV where did you get them? If you have some to sell, I'm interested in one...

    So in this picture...

What is the arm attached too?

  • I only have crappy camera phone so excuse the pics. The arm is part of the hub, and bolts to the bracket:

Unfortunately i was only able to get hold of 5 from the US, and they have all found homes from people responding when i originally started this thread, However i am more than happy to ask the guy i got them off if he can get some more(i cleaned him out of all he had left) Cost worked out at 20 quid per hub including shipping. Apparently they cant make them quick enough.

I repacked it with grease before building the wheel.

I'm moving to the states in a month so if you could give me the suppliers info, it might work out cheaper if I can get one shipped to my address there. Otherwise, if you do make another order soon, I will gladly be on the list!

The sturmey Archer I am running now is great fun, but I don't really trust it.

  • It was actually cheaper to get them from the US than from Europe ?!?! The guy i got them off was someone like us from an american forum who organised a group buy from the factory and had some left over, so effectively i paid cost price for them, as they werent marked up from a shop.

I will give him a buzz and get the details of how he ordered them from the factory (they never responded to my emails) and set something up , then take orders and sell any spares on ebay.

  • Awesome. Well let me know if anything happens.

There is someone trying to sell one newon bikeforums.net for $40, but it is 36H and I would ideally like 32.

  • Yeah VV, please let me know...

  • Motoko - if you dont want the one on bike forums let me know the details...

Yup, I will let you know. Not 100% sure I want it yet as it is a 36H and I'd like 32H.

36 is standard for wheels designed to be durable. Especially for fixed/hub brakes wheels!

You can even get 40-48h old fixed hubs, originally designed for tandems I think.

I always avoid buying 32h wheels at all costs, its crap for mountain bikes too.

You can find 36h rims no problem.

Oh yeah, put me on the wanted list!

    Would take two.

  • Point taken on 36H. The Sturmey Archer I am running now ( and loving is a 36).

It might be cheaper getting the hub here rather than the guy from Bike Forums if we do a group buy, so if we can get a ball park figure for say 10 hubs, I can determine if I am in or not.

  • They only come in 36h me thinks . . .minumum factory order is 25 units, which i reckon would probably work out something like a tenner per hub. Will let you know when i have sorted something.

  • Not bad. What you reckon the process time would be approx? Within a month? Just I am moving to the states at the end of June. And a tenner is better than $40

  • Well when i spoke to Kogswell, who sell em in the US (see top of thread) thay had put an order in in march, and were expecting delivery in June . . so god knows

    braze on

  • if anyone wants to do a large order count me in. is this velosteel model significantly better that a new sturmey archer or shimano?
these things are fairly rare so there are precisely no reviews anywhere on the internet. can get a sturmey archer off ebay at the moment but if they're shit and unreliable and this is the coaster brake daddy i'll hold out.

If you want something now, go with a sturmey archer. Make sure you repack it with grease though, the horrible Taiwanese stuff looks about 50 years old, even though it is in a new hub. I am running one as an alternative back wheel, and it is great fun. Brakes are responsive, and if you want you can pull some mega skids. They are relatively cheap, so if something does go wrong, you can just change the inners, and not have to replace the whole wheel.

  • nice! I'll pop down and get one there....

  • should be getting them in very soon..I'll let you know.

  • I have an older Velosteel one from about three yrs ago. Do you think I could run it brakeless?

  • I find a front brake helps you accurately do the very last bit of stopping, so keeping your pedals in the position you'll want to start from in a moment. Its' a fiddle to get your pedals in position if you're in the wrong place when you stop.

    Make sense?

  • ja but I want to be rid of my braks with my ADB-x bars
