• could be several things..fucked/loose BB, loose crank bolts, fucked/loose pedal axles..loose chainring bolts (!)

    if the bike took a knock, and you're not mechanically experienced, maybe take it to the bike shop to get the once over?

  • i had this once ...eliminated it by pedaling in units of 4 only.

  • It never seems to matter what the drivetrain question is but the correct answer is always 'tighten chainring bolts'.

    The ones that came with my Sugino 75 are fecking useless; use them with a stupidly pricy Sugino Zen chainring ring and they bottomed out before getting properly tight.

    So then I spent some money on some all black Sugino bolts from Milwaukee Cycles and it turned out they were mislabelled and useless too.

  • dat yoke won't work on 75's and some others because the rear bolts are pressed into the cranks and don't turn.

  • hello all, my new bike and i enjoyed our first fall together on monday thanks to a zero warning left turner on green lanes, at first it seemed like the only damage was grazed handlebar tape but i've now noticed a clicking sound that seems to happen every 5 or 6 pedal revolutions coming from the bottom bracket. I don't really see how the fall would have caused it but just wondered if anyone had experienced something similar? cheers

    no, its a fresh 2008 fuji track. as it's only 2 months old i thought it was bit soon for the BB to be going but maybe the knock had loosed something.

    I would take it to a shop but i'd like to try sort it out myself first...thanks for the advice guys

  • IF doubt strip it down clean and rebuild. Gives you a chance to inspect everything.

    Tommy I have three bikes all of which need completely stripping down and cleaning and rebuilding... can you show me how? It'd save me doing it ;)

    i'd include the pedals in the check list. but stripping it and re-assembling it is a good move. just check sheldons site for tools and do it early on a saturday with knowledge of the local bike shop incase it goes south!

    it's always from the left hand side, which is the side i fell on and the side that was treated to a nice kerb strike yesterday as well. pressure doesn't make any difference, it happens all the time. is this the kind of thing that could potentially cause more damage if left untreated?

  • cheapish pedals are often the culprits of mysterious drivetrain clicking. bearings loosen up, cone cracks, or they just make noise cause of poor craftsmanship. not saying thats what it is, but maybe keep it in mind...

    well that wouldn't suprise me, the stock fuji pedals are a pile of gash...they have these weird lips that stop my foot going all the way into the clip so it often takes 3 or 4 attempts to get in there. well annoying. they were next on my list to be replaced anyway so i hope that's the problem

  • well, even if they aren't the problem, as you say, they're well worth replacing anyway.

  • sounds like pedals. I went through two sets of cheap MTB pedals one summer just commuting until I learned to spend a few more pennies and get better quality.

    Left side noises sometimes indicate BB attachment problems as all drive force from left side goes through both BB and spider, right side just goes through spider.

    (You do know about left-hand pedal threads though, don't you? Phew, that's a relief.)

  • Everytime i brake heavily i get a knocking sound from the front of my bike. Did a bit of googling and narowed it down to the headset. Pulled it all apart and cleaned and tightened all back up...still knocking? The headset is only 6 montsh old...anything else it could be or should i just buy a new one?

  • IS the brake tight? If you put the brake on and push the bike forward does it rock forward? The bolt at the front may be loose.

  • is it knocking like juddering or knocking like one big knock?

  • if its not what tommy said maybe have a look at your front fork for...
