You might want crank arms shorter than 170mm, particularly if you are on a converted road frame.

If you're going vintage, how about some nice Campag Record pista cranks? Total sex... And welcome! :)

I would go for 165mm cranks on a conversion as road frames tend to have a lower BB shell than a track frame and with longer crank arms your chances of having a pedal strike are increased.
Chainrng compatibility here is largely a non-issue, 144 BCD is track standard and so you can get rings without difficulty.
BB compatibility is something you want to keep an eye on as it is easier to get this part wrong, you might want to take a look through this list of drive chain combinations that have been successful for people ('successful' here means a good straight chainline).

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. I will go for shorter arms, probably suginos or the campag pista. One more question, does the BB length very much depend on the rear hub - I'm running a white industries eccentric eno.

One note, for square taper BBs there are two standards - ISO and JIS, JIS is much more common and readily available. The Sugino 75s ideally use the less common ISO standard although you can get them onto a JIS BB, but they do not go onto the taper a far as they would on an ISO taper - so you will get a less predicatable chain line and - I guess - the interface will be less stiff (?)
Anyhow all this could be moot as I do not know anything about your frame, the rear spacing and so on.

Yes, you need to work out the effective chain line of your rear hub and factor this in when you get your BB/cranks.
You can do this with a ruler.
One final point is that the cog/freewheel you choose will vary in it's position on your hub - which doesn't help !

Hi there, been lurking whilst building first vintage looking fixed, this site has been my main reference so thanks. Next purchase is chainset and have been looking at the Sugino 75 as I see it's been picked up by a few of you. I quite fancy this though but am nervous of making a mistake. So the question is, with a total budget of £150 for cranks should I buy proven or take a punt - any reason why I shouldn't buy, what about chainrng and BB compatibility? Cheers.
