Fixie accidents?

Posted on
  • Ive not done much riding on fixed, but I do like it !

I built up a conversion last year which I only got to ride for a few weeks because of my bodged parts usage.

Just ressurrected properly today, got a nice "safe" bolted rear wheel & trusty rustproof chain on it now.

I was expecting to be super confident riding it now and be able to go full whack down hills & through traffic, as I dnt have to worry about the wheel falling out or the chain snapping anymore.

But I find myself riding it in the same "timid" way as before.

Main thing im worried about is going fast round corners.

I have 170mm cranks and its probably quite possible for me to hit the ground round turns.

I really should just try it to find out how bad it is, but im a pussy and I just cant bring myself to do it on purpose.

Would be interested to hear about other peoples fixie specific accidents, and how bad they were.

And body gone head first into a bus doing a skid stop? - haha.

I actually did get knocked down by a car last year, but I dont think it wouldve helped being on freewheel.

  • ....we all crash at sometime!

**HTFU ** and get one of these:

  • I have 170mm cranks and its probably quite possible for me to hit the ground round turns.

Off your bike - put your crank arm perpendicular to the floor (6 o'clock position) - take your shoe off and stick it in the pedal, now looking from the front slowly lean your bike over until any of the pedal/crank/shoe touches the ground - this should give you an idea of what it takes to strike.

I was stabbed by my bike, it chased me up a tree then stabbed me, it was naked and I was scared.

Doesn't really count as an accident. Sounds quite deliberate to me.

Mind you, if you wrapped my "post" in luminescent material and then posted pictures of me on the internet, I'd chase you up a tree naked. probably.

    Very good point.

  • Big crank strike debate here:

I think the long and short of it was it's nae bother. Unless you're Barry Sheen.

i'd look elsewhere for a sense of humour, if i were you, assclown.

  • I have 170mm cranks and I rip it up. Forget pedal strike and just remember to get sick on the streets

  • Managed to stack a trackstand at a set of traffic lights...

Cue, classic slow motion fall to the right, attempting to unstrap toe clips and failing, anyhoo a bunch of amused white van men and some road rash later, and everything's alright again.

Either way, I ordered some SPD's that night

Another bad day for BMMF ?

  • I saw a bloke (on a geared bike) face-plant the back of an ambulance on Clerkenwell road last week. He was tearing up the outside of traffic when a police car came up the road behind him with siren on. He pulled into the first gap in traffic and slammed on the brakes - slowly bringing himself up onto the front wheel and going over just enough to head butt the stationary ambulance in front.

Bike accidents are never funny, but he was so graceful i had to chuckle, and he didn't seemed harmed.

@OP - the way i approach things; cycling / traffic can be dangerous, whatever you ride. Maybe get shorter cranks to stop you thinking about the pedal strike?

  • being timid is good it stop you getting into situations you arn't ready for.

  • I got 175 mm cranks and they've never caused me any problems.

  • Made a total assclown of myself a few months ago, skip stopping at 26mph in gridlock traffic. Didn't allow myself enough stopping distance and grabbed the front brake WHILE skipping- flipped forward and slammed my shoulder into the ground at 20mph. Painful, deserved it, and will never do that again (i hope). What a cock brain.

  • i knocked a motorcyclist off who stopped dead in front of me, i skidded into them at 30mph, bent my front wheel which locked up my front wheel, which sent me over the bars onto my head. the motorcyclist came off worse tho - stuck under their bike cos it was too heavy for them.

hehehe at the moment you feel yourself falling you say to yourself "i'll get my foot out, i'll get my foot out, oh im fucked"

  • accidents = bad. get shorter cranks, stay timid, brake & ride your bicycle forever.
them hospital beds have got wheels but man they're just no fun at all.

I managed to get the left out! Shame about the whole falling right thing
