Stolen bikes turn up everywhere, Gumtree is a good place as anywhere for getting a legit bike.
Unless the ad is highly suspicious I would presume it is all above board, although I am sure stolen bikes have popped up here and there (Just like Loot/ebay/Singletrackworld/etc) - 99.99% of what you see on Gumtree will be fine.

the general concensus seems to be that it's a piece of shit, so i'll prob give it a miss. i'm a total bike rookie, want to spend about 200 pounds, but i plan on riding it to work so want it to be decent,

is this a good one? i can buy this today i think, but the guy said he was near kingsland, which seems to be ahotspot for bike theft.

Do you want a single speed, fixed gear or geared bike ?
There was a Langster (Brown) on gumtree a day or so back - £250.

I would say go for the Langster, if you are new to the whole thing you don't have to faff around with gears, nor do you have to get used to the vagaries of fixed wheel.
Single speed is a nice halfway house. The Langster is single speed.
Make sure the bike fits you !!

ok, i rang the guy and got him down to 200, i'm, gonna meet him alter. how shal i tell if the bike fits?

thakns for all this help by the way!

just make sure its comfortable when you sit on it, stand astride the bike, there should be at least an inch between the top tube and your crotch, adjust the saddle height so that when your leg is at the bottom of the pedal stroke your leg is almost straight. Thats how i do it anyway.

Good move !! Now when you turn up you need to say you could only get 180 out of the cash point. :P
£200 is pretty good if the bike is in decent nick, look for obvious stuff, big dents, gouges etc.

Ring him up again and ask him what size it is. I think the langsters have a sticker on them with the size on it. If you're 6 foot you'll need a 58.
