As a Londoner I'm so sick of this shit it's untrue and I know I'm far from alone. There was an interesting debate last night on Newsnight, about youths killing youths. What it seemed to boil down to for me was a complete spiritual deficit. And the following points make murder happen:
Kids carry knives largely because they're scared that other kids are carrying knives and without one they'll become a victim.
There are many disaffected youths on London's streets, filled with rage, and rage gives birth to these attacks. What are they so angry about? Very often it's family stuff and at the risk of gross generalisation for many black boys it's the lack of a father figure within their family unit. If both parents are off the scene then it's rage aimed at the inadequacy of Social Services and the authorities in general.
There's a complete misconception that 'stuff' bling/material goods can bring fulfillment (a friend of my goddaughter got stabbed in the chest for his mobile phone - one collapsed lung). This only adds to the spiritual deficit. Get some stuff, need more, get some more, need more still - ad infinitum.
It's fucked up and no mistake. I believe that what's happening is a direct reflection of society. People have children without thinking about it, or for all the wrong reasons - like to save a drowning relationship, wtf is that all about? Where's the fucking logic? It's not working out so let's have a baby? Eh? Kids themselves have become 'objects'. I want a baby, so I'll get one. And this is what happens when they're brought up with no real hope, no sense of the true value of life. They turn around and stab you in the arse.
