dropping tools and chipping the paint time after time after bloody time...
Ha i have that same problem, with wrenches its ok, but when you drop the welding torch things get a bit iffy. Lucky only pulled that stunt once (bang on trees).

Joke! about the sale, put those torches down.
I've been loitering for ages and have built up my first fixed with knowledge gained only from this site and Sheldon Brown, so cheers. Every problem I encountered had been addressed in some previous thread and the site really does contain pretty much everything you might need to know, including the value of people's actual experience with building and buying. It was my first build and the things I thought would be hard were easy (fitting the bottom bracket) and the things I thought would be easy, hard (dropping tools and chipping the paint time after time after bloody time...).
The hardest part was sourcing the parts- trying to keep it 'period', and then working out I didn't very much care about that. Kept the braise-ons etc. and plan to build it up geared in the winter and start work on a nice, bare 531 frame I've picked up and dremel-ed the braise-ons off. Yeah, I like projects.
Anyway, I'm now about on either an orange geared Mercian or the newly assembled red Olmo- I'll post a pic once I manage to produce a half-decent photo (photographing bikes is harder than just lining up the crank arm...)
If you see me out west, say hello!
You are cool, managing to do all that and not come across like a total n00b with annoying questions and such.
Welcome !

ha! try it with babies!! i (almost) did that once in front of the father, midwife and obstetrician (yes, i'm a paediatrician) but luckily caught it about 2 inches from the floor. phew!

ha! that could have been a very awkward situation.

so who was this torpid guy?
i've been really busy the past week or two, haven't been on the forum that much. looks like i missed a load of drama...welcome lorenzo! good to see someone actually reading before they ask questions.
unfortunately though mate, as tynan says, we still have to kill you anyway! -

nice grab. I had stupidly touched my tungsten to my welding rod, and all that electricity that was being used to melt steel went coursing through my body... whats your excuse?
and ummm I... i mean my mate has this rash...

Death threats aside I've got off lightly. Cheers for the welcome!
My knees are a bit crap so I went for about 72" gear inches. It feels ridiculously spinny at the moment and I realise that, however well I might have done putting the thing together (time will tell), I need to learn to ride properly. It's frustrating on the straights right now- I hate being passed by seven year-olds on mountain bikes.
Hopefully see some of you at drinks soon.

and i like how someone tagged this thread 'now piss off'.
hmmm...

72" is fine. i usually ride 69"
most people seem to start off on a high gear then lower it after a while. just get used to pedalling at a higher cadence.
