BMX maintenance

  • The DIY bike workshop that I mech at is currently being innundated with folk on BMXen.
Not many of the crew have experience with BMX stuff, so was wondering if anyone can point me toward any good resources that explain the specificities of maintaining/fixing BMXs so that we can get schooled up.

Stuff like profile-style cranks, setting up gyros, part compatibility.. basically all that you don't get on road/MTB bikes.

  • Profile cranks are shit, there tolerances are fucking bollcocks, you have to bodge every set. They can't make shims a consistent size nevermind amke a c/ring round. Take gyro's off, nobody uses them anymore. other than that this site is really useful....

  • gyros are easy to set up you just need even tension between the two cables so that when you turn the bars the floating part does not flip flop. If someone want to run a gyro let them it's their bike.

  • Profile cranks are awesome. I've had/got two pairs and no problems, save for the pair I used when riding fixed and that was due to the chainring bolt not being designed for fixed use.

    Gyros, what Tommy said!

  • bmx's are super simple to repair. all you need are a few allen keys and a big mallet. just try perusing fly's, odyssey's, profile's and primo's websites. most good bmx companies give all the tech specs and how-to's on their site, with exploded diagram, etc.

  • shadow conspiracy site has little videos showing how to fit their products. Pretty helpful.

  • http://www.bikeguide.org/how-to/brakes/brakes.php Is an excellent guide to brakes. Has some gyro tips as well. Should be read by everyone not just people dealing with BMX brakes.

I've had 3 sets and never had to bodge any of em!

i still hate the things, they are pretty but I dont rate them. Mean't to be awful for warranty aswell

  • after visiting cranks on sat, I see why you need to read up on the bmx stuff tim.
